A few days ago I posted a q + a on my insta story asking “what would you do if you weren’t afraid?” I received a ton of responses (which I’ll cover in another blog), but one of the main answers was about moving to a big city.
As someone who recently graduated and immediately packed up my life & relocated to Chicago, I can tell you that it. was. EXPENSIVE. So, I’ll let you all in on the tragedy that was my bank account and where exactly all my money has gone. Disclaimer: thankfully, I’ve had the help of my parents during this move. If not, I would probably be pretending to head home after work everyday while secretly living in the dumpster behind the building. Anyways, my Venmo is @vicky-palacio & donations are appreciated (Lol, kidding but not kidding)
THE REASONS I CAN NO LONGER BINGE-SHOP ONLINE:
flight: $400
*sigh* all of the Spirit flights were sold out, so I was forced to spend more than $250- but at least I didn’t have to sit fetal position the entire flight. Leg room: exceptional, snacks: trash. I’m sorry but how do you ONLY offer Biscoff cookies? A tragedy.
apartment application fee: $650 ?????
……. basically I threw $650 in the garbage. SIX HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS just for this apartment complex to glance at a piece of paper, run my credit, and come to the conclusion that I won’t set the place on fire. What a time to be alive.
rent: $1,890 a month
I’ll be completely transparent and let you know that I live in a 1/1 on the 39th floor of a very nice apartment with downtown views… BUT that’s simply due to the fact that it was the only available 3 month lease that I could find after searching EVERY NIGHT FOR 3 WEEKS. I’m most likely blacklisted from every apartment complex in Chi because of how annoying I was. So, aside from the sketchy Craiglists postings that would probably end with a kidnapping AND steal a first & last months deposit from me- a boujee apartment was the only choice I had.
electric/internet/water/trash: $140 a month
You literally need to pay a fee for your trash.. that you bring to the dumpster yourself…. Lowkey missing the days that my college apartment complex would come around and pick up the trash from my front door. This is an accurate representation of the many insane fees that you’ll pay in a big city. (p.s. this includes legit the most basic Wifi in the world. AKA- you better hope someone shares their AdmitMe password with you because you’re not ever getting access to any HBO)
furniture: $133
OBVS furniture is not included, so I pay $133 a month for a bed, a couch and ONE NIGHTSTAND. At least I have more room for activities
Ventra Card: $105
$105 to ride a crowded bus that takes 45 minutes to bring me to my job that would take me 6 minutes to get to IF I HAD A CAR. Fun story: I get lost a minimum of two times a week trying to navigate the bus routes and find out where bus stops are. It’s such a vibe running around the city trying to find the right bus stop before I miss it and have to wait another 25 minutes before the next one comes. I’ve only gotten on the incorrect bus twice… guess you could say I’m thriving.
gym: $85 + $70 application fee
I’ve had an LA Fitness membership for the past seven years, but I got lost trying to commute there everyday in Chi, so relationship was clearly not going to work. I broke up with LA and decided I’d just use the gym that’s connected to my apartment. SURPRISE! Pay $85 a month. Oh, you live here? Sure, we can give you a discount on the $200 massages we offer, but we can’t be flexible on the membership price. OOPS, there’s also a $70 application fee as well. Hope you don’t mind trading your entire paycheck for abs!

(Since my internship & lease were only 3 months, I couldn’t use a moving truck to bring all the basics I already owned, so I had to re-purcahse allll of these things. I LIVE for buying TV’s and throwing them away in 3 months)

- bedding, pillows, blankets- $50 (thank u @amazon, Z Gallerie imy)
- tv- $110 (not necessary, but necessary)
- filling my fridge with Trader Joes

- microwave- $50 ($5,670 rent & no microwave included, it’s lit)
- iron & ironing board: $20

- lamp- $10
groceries: $60 a week

Honestly, I can’t include this or I’ll cry. Don’t budget this into your relocation costs, because hopefully you’ll be smarter than me financially wise!

Now taking applications for someone who will physically come to my house and delete Postmates from my phone. I’ve made eleven different accounts just so that I can continuously use the same $12 promo code I found online. Slightly concerning or just incredibly smart? You decide.
total cost to relocate: $4,195 (not including ANY social expenses)
fyi: excluding social expenses, I had a total of $9,372 in bills after 3 months. (rent, electric, groceries, gym, everything i mentioned in this article adding up, etc.)
current mood: calculated all of my bills and how much I’ve spent on sushi and still craving my favorite $16 roll.
To tie it all up: moving is sickeningly expensive, but also worth it. You meet new people, experience new things, and grow as a person. If you’ve secured a job/internship in a new city, go live your best life and hope that the company you work for has free snacks in the kitchen! If not, you can just write a blog and ask people to Venmo you like I did.
(But on a serious note- moving away to a new city taught me so many lessons and opened my eyes to so many things. I highly recommend putting yourself out of your comfort zone and placing yourself in an environment that you’ve never experienced before and chasing your dreams. It will always pay off in the end)
I also moved to a completely different city Orlando then Miami) when I was in my early 20’s. Holy hell was that a wake up call haha.
If you ever need a good laugh, I’ll tell you the embarrassing story on ig of just the initial move lmao. How unprepared and ignorant I was 😅. Loved every second of it tho.
